This week I had the privilege of filming a professional development module with Genesis Education for Think GP on ‘Nutrition, Healthy Eating and Weight Management’. ThinkGP are one of Australia’s largest medical professional development companies providing one hour online education modules on a wide range of topics from asthma to zinc. So, they educate the doctors and health professionals that educate you!

The module that we filmed today covered information about the new Dietary Guidelines, the NHMRC overweight and obesity treatment guidelines, evidence for a higher protein, low GI diet and tips and tricks for health professionals to use with their clients.

One of the things that we focused on was using a three-pronged attack for sustainable weight loss: dietary modification, physical activity and behavioural modification. The evidence for needing this three pronged attack is strong. It’s one of the key reasons why fad diets just don’t (and won’t ever) work. There’s only so long that you can stick to a diet and exercise plan if you can’t deal with the behavioural issues such as what motivates you, what’s important to you and how to actually fit your goals around your lifestyle. Behavioural modification is about making permanent changes to your habits. Things like making sure that you have breakfast every day, finding time for planned exercise or dealing with emotional eating issues.

If you’re interested to learn more, keep your eyes open for the module at www.thinkgp.com.au. It will be online by the end of August, and best of all, all of their professional education modules are free. I hope you enjoy it!

To do: Log on to ThinkGP to try some of their education modules.
